Why camp and kayak with our team at Canoe the Riverland?

Commitment to ecotourism best practice and care for the environment means we can get you closer to our region’s incredible river life without disrupting their natural habitat.

  • Expert Guides. All guides are fully qualified and must pass our own internal assessment to ensure they operate to strict local and national safety guidelines.
  • Fun, friendly and authentic Aussie hospitality: the Roberts family are South Australian through and through, and know the area like the back of their hands
  • Range of Services. We live on the river so we provide kayaking for all levels of experience but also host Dinghy Cruises, onsite camping and a romantic Paddle-Boat B&B for overnight accommodation on the water.
  • If you’d like to stay longer – do it in style. We operate the one of few paddleboats along the river, our gorgeous Julie Fay moored accommodation. All self-contained, private modern facilities for 1-2 people
  • All modern kayak equipment supplied. We take care of the details. You switch off and enjoy.
  • No previous kayaking experience necessary. We give full instruction and use stable, single or tandem kayaks.

Some physical fitness is required for our camping kayak tour. You should have a good level of mobility and enjoy good health. Please keep in mind that the second day requires the ability to kayak 20kms and there are a number of riverbank excursions offered on your kayak tour where you will get in and out of your kayak.

We recommend you bring a good pair of walking shoes or boots, carry a water bottle and don’t forget the sunglasses, sunscreen and hat. Occasionally there will be a riverbank landing where you may need to wade through shallow water a short distance to reach the bank.

Itinerary

Day 1

Welcome: We meet at Canoe the Riverland in Murtho, SA. Your guide will instruct you on the use of equipment and safety procedures and answer any questions and explain the day’s activities.

After stowing our camping gear we will kayak 8-9kms through beautiful creeks and lagoons to the site of a WWII Internment camp. Your guide will describe the days of the internment camp as well as identify aboriginal marks, edible plants and animal tracks that abound in this area. Here we will set up our tents, take time to explore the site and settle down around our cosy campfire.

Meals: Lunch & Dinner provided.

Day 2

After a hot breakfast, we head off to kayak 19kms, stopping for breaks along Ral Ral Creek which runs through the historic Calperum Station, learning to recognise the birds and other wildlife along the way.

The end of our day brings us to Murtho Forest Landing, where a hearty campfire and our support paddleboat, the Julie Fay, will be waiting. After setting up our camp, we will welcome a hot shower and delicious BBQ aboard the PB Julie Fay; a great reward for a fabulous day on the river. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.

Day 3

After breakfast, we’ll break camp and head back into the lagoons behind the Murray River, entering Big Hunchee Creek, and then finishing 11kms upstream at Wilkadene’s Woolshed Brewery. Settle down on their magnificent timber deck on the riverbank for a boutique beer and scrumptious picnic lunch, where we will share our morning adventures and highlights overlooking the beautiful river.

After our lunch, we unpack our kayaks, and we take a short minibus ride to the iconic Headings Cliff Lookout. From there we will be able to check out the lagoons and creeks from on high, and admire the beautiful golden river cliffs that line the river at this junction. From here, the minibus will return us to Canoe the Riverland, just a quick fifteen minutes down the road. It is here we say goodbye and wish you well on your forward journey.

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch with a complimentary boutique beer.
